This week, we have another update from Erik on the Bolivian Rosewood boxes for our Nicolas Conver Tarot deck.
But first, we want to congratulate him and his wife Katie on having their first child. She had a few complications with her pregnancy, and the baby was born 3 weeks premature. The good news is that Katie and Leif are now doing well.
As you can imagine, this has limited Erik’s availability to work on the boxes. However, he is still making progress and is now putting together the first batch of 36 boxes.
In our last post, we explained how he cuts the wood to size and engraves the flower logo on the tops of the boxes.
Now, he is cutting the finger joints that hold the pieces together at the bottom of the box. It took him 1,872 passes on the table saw to cut the joints for the 36 boxes. These joints add strength to the area that holds the deck when the box is opened and while the deck is on display.

He then sands the inside faces of the wood and glues the front and bottom of the boxes together. He has to sand the inside of the boxes first as it’s too difficult to sand them after the pieces are together. The sanding ensures that the deck will slide in and out of the box with ease.

Normally, box joints are glued as a 4 sided box, providing counter pressure for each joint. As these joints are unsupported with only 3 sides, each must be glued separately with a custom jig to ensure they are tight and square. You can see the jig in the photo above.
Erik estimates that the first batch of boxes will be finished in 2 - 3 weeks. Once they are finished, we will ship them in the order they were purchased. We appreciate your patience and look forward to getting these Nicolas Conver Tarot boxes to you.
We still have a few boxes available for purchase. You can get one at the link below.
Until next time,
