The Gentle Tarot is a hand-drawn tarot deck inspired by decolonizing the practice of tarot, compassion for mental health, and connection to our natural environment as a source of support and meaningful relation. 

The Gentle Tarot is a classic 78-card deck, with some illustrations rooted in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition and others arising from intuitive, creative processes.

There are variations in the suits and court cards. The Swords have been replaced with Thunder, and the Pentacles with Stones. Similarly, the court cards are Seed, Root, Flower, and Harvest instead of Page, Knight, Queen, and King. This renaming represents internal stages of growth with a direct connection to nature and a conscious distancing from colonial symbols.

The deck includes 89 cards with an extra Major Arcana card and two Lovers card options (non-human butterfly and gender-neutral human). An additional eight cards are a colorful batch of Quick Reference Keys, Sample Spreads, Opening and Closing Intentions, and a personal note with a link to the PDF guidebook.

Mariza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar

The Gentle Tarot was created by Mariza Ryce Aparicio-Tovar and published by her independent publishing house, Mari in the Sky. Mari's Indigenous roots are Chichimeca and Wixárika from Zacatecas, Central México. She is an Anchorage Museum Residency Fellow and a Rasmuson Foundation grant recipient. The Alaska Humanities Forum has featured her art. She is currently based in Homer, Alaska. 

Mari’s art was created on and inspired by the lands of indigenous nations in three regions of Alaska: the lands of the Unangax̂ in Iluulux̂ (Unalaska) in the Aleutian Islands, the lands of the Sun’aq on Kodiak Island; and the Sugpiaq, Dena’ina, and the Ninilchik Village Tribe between the Kenai peninsula and Anchorage. Mari got to know these remote regions of Alaska over the course of eight years, while working for the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska Island and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Kodiak, Sand Point, and Dutch Harbor.
