Bethany van Rijswijk

Bethany van Rijswijk is a collage artist and writer based in Tasmania, Australia. Her visual art has been exhibited within Australia and internationally, and she has been granted residencies in Tasmania, New Zealand, and Sweden. Her collages have been featured in various print publications, including Broccoli Magazine, Mushroom People, Catnip Magazine, Future Lutruwita, and Folklore for Resistance.

In 2023, her book of essays and collages exploring the folklore of poisonous plants and fungi entitled The Invisible Harvest: A Microhistory of Heretical Herbs was published by Broccoli Publishing. She is currently collaborating with Broccoli on a series of collaged oracle decks which includes The Mushroom Oracle, The Seashell Oracle and The Flower Oracle.

Ellen Freeman

Ellen Freeman is a writer and editor based in Mexico City. She is the founder of Mildew, an annual print magazine about secondhand fashion, and deputy editor of Broccoli, Catnip, and Mushroom People.

She co-founded Neuro Fuzzy Press and served as contributing editor to The Changing Times' Tokyo issue. Ellen's writing on culture, history, and the arts has been published in New York Magazine, The Nation, Atlas Obscura, i-D, Refinery29, Roads & Kingdoms, and other publications.

Once Upon a Time

In a land you may or may not recognize, there was an oracle that told you Fairy Tales. With clever cats and mischievous goblins, it winked at diviners who understood the pull off the forests path while warning them still of the wolves they might find.

I find this deck to be quite intuitive, with the guidebook and imagery inter-playing in nice ways to assist my readings. The way this deck works with me is by giving my problems fairy tale equivalents and letting me tell the story of how I the character overcome these challenges. I recommend for people who grew up alongside the brothers Grimm and other western fairy tales. If you don't have or want that cultural familiarity this deck might have a harder time communicating with you.

A new favorite!

I have the mushroom deck by these creators, so I knew the excellent quality product this would be. The collage artwork is eloquent and is wonderful for intuitive reading of meditation inspiration. The writing, and structure of the deck gives it layers beyond the fairytale concept. It’s a quality product that will bring joy and meaning for years.
