Paul Marteau

Paul Marteau (1885–1966) was a French cardmaker and director of the Grimaud playing card company, where he played a key role in preserving and modernizing the Tarot de Marseille tradition. In 1930, he introduced the Ancien Tarot de Marseille, a reimagined version of the classic 1761 Conver deck, which became one of the most widely used Marseille-style decks.

In 1949, Marteau published Le Tarot de Marseille, a concise yet influential book offering symbolic interpretations for all 78 cards. His structured, color- and number-based approach helped define 20th-century French tarot reading and influenced later figures such as Alejandro Jodorowsky.
