U.S. Games Systems has proudly reissued the Hermetic Tarot deck in recognition of its historical and artistic importance. The details and symbols in each card reveal many of the esoteric workings of the Secret Order of the Golden Dawn, which flourished around the turn of the century.

Godfrey Dowson’s subtle black-and-white designs emphasize the Golden Dawn’s astrological attributes, with further sephirot, angelic, geomantic, numerical, and kabbalistic elements. All 78 cards feature an exquisite level of detail that highlights the powerful symbolism.

The 72-page instruction booklet includes an introduction by Stuart R. Kaplan and card meanings written by Godfrey Dowson and Stuart R. Kaplan. It also gives instructions for the classic ten-card Celtic Cross layout and presents a chart of the elemental and astrological symbols, a diagram of the ten spheres, and 22 Hebrew Letters of the 22 Paths of the Tree of Life.

Godfrey Dowson

Godfrey Dowson was a self-taught illustrator and former engineer who began his career with a painting called Mega Vault, commissioned by Imagine but never used or paid for. After moving to Wales in 1976, he completed his portfolio and launched into freelance illustration, drawing on his interest in fantasy and knowledge of magic to redesign a Tarot deck and work with publishers like Aquarian Press and Granada Books.

He later became a regular artist for Level 9, starting with Red Moon and completing around ten titles. Working in inks and gouache, Godfrey enjoyed researching his subjects and placing familiar objects in unusual settings. He lived in an Elizabethan manor house on the Welsh border with his wife and a bevy of cats, grateful for the peace after trips to London to see clients. Godfrey Dowson passed away in 2005 at the age of 53.

Stuart R. Kaplan

In 1968, Stuart Kaplan discovered the Swiss 1JJ Tarot at the Nuremberg Toy Fair and began selling it in New York. With no guide available, he wrote Tarot Cards for Fun and Fortune Telling. With these products, he founded U.S. Games Systems, Inc., the first company to publish tarot decks in the U.S. Stuart brought recognition to Pamela Colman Smith through years of research and his book Pamela Colman Smith: The Untold Story.

He also authored the four-volume Encyclopedia of Tarot and viewed tarot as a creative and meditative tool. A passionate collector, his final project was The Game of Authors Compendium. Stuart Kaplan passed away on February 9, 2021, at 88. He is remembered for his kindness, humor, and generosity.
