Patrick Valenza presents uniquely alternative interpretations of traditional tarot with symbolism inspired by childhood dreams. Stylized moon-faced characters created from manipulated photographs of 18th-century tombstones are set against evocative backgrounds. Surreal scenes of distant smoke stacks, insane asylums, and abandoned buildings are incorporated into the artwork.

The included guidebook gives interesting card descriptions and interpretations, both upright and reversed. The symmetric card backs, showing different phases of the moon, allow for reversed readings. Also included in the booklet is a unique ten-card spread called the Lunatic Spread, which mimics the shape of the full moon and derives energy from its circular pattern.

The Deviant Moon Tarot has drawn a cult following and was voted as the Top Tarot Deck of All Time by Aeclectic Tarot readers.

Patrick Valenza

Patrick Valenza is the creator of the Deviant Moon Tarot, a surreal and dreamlike deck known for its moon-faced characters and dark, whimsical style. Released in 2008 by U.S. Games Systems, the deck quickly became a favorite in the tarot community, earning recognition as one of the top tarot decks of all time. Valenza’s unique artistic process blends hand-drawn figures with textures from 19th-century tombstones and abandoned buildings, creating haunting imagery that resonates deeply with those drawn to shadow work and introspective readings.

In addition to Deviant Moon Tarot, Valenza has produced several other imaginative decks under his publishing imprint, Deviant Moon Inc., including Trionfi della Luna and Mildred Payne’s Oracle of Black Enchantment. His work inspires tarot readers and collectors with its blend of gothic surrealism and psychological depth.
