The Jean Dodal Tarot was produced in Lyon, France, in 1701. Two versions are preserved in the National Library of France and the British Museum. We referenced both of these decks for our restoration.
This is the complete 78-card tarot deck and includes an information card and promotional card. The deck is in French, and the extra cards are in English.

Krisztina is the co-founder of Artisan Tarot. She has a Master’s Degree in Design from The University of Sopron. She specializes in linocut printmaking, which is similar to how tarot cards were produced. This background gives her unique insight into digitally restoring historic artwork. To date, she has created 16 tarot decks for Artisan Tarot.

Restoration Process
The restoration consisted of meticulously redrawing and recoloring the images. We also clarified many of the details to create consistency. Our goal was not to create an exact reproduction, but an elegant and refined deck that inspires the imagination of the modern reader.
Historical Information
An interesting mystery in the history of this deck is the two different spellings of Jean Dodal's name. On the 2 of Cups, "Jean Dodal" is written in large text. However, on the 2 of Coins is "Faict a Lyon par Jean Dodali". This shows that the deck was produced in Lyon, France, by "Jean Dodali".
Historians believe that Jean Dodal may have changed his name to a more Italian-sounding version in an effort to facilitate export. This theory is supported by the phrase "F.P. Le Trange" (fait pour l'etranger - made for export), which appears on the four Knights, the Page of Batons, Force, and The World.

Very nice card stock. It is sturdy but thin enough to make it comfortable to hold and shuffle. I love the vintage art work. I am excited to work with it for years.
The quality of this deck and all Artisan Tarot decks I've purchased so far is beyond exceptional. I really like the clean line work of these over other reproductions and the card stock is exactly the kind I'd always wished was standard from other manufacturers.

Being honest, I was always reluctant to these restorations because they always seemed so clean. After having them in my hands I just wonder why I didn't try them sooner. Beautifully designed, the clean aesthetic offers a lighting fast impression because everything jumps out of the cards on a first glance. Add that to Dodal's expressions and you get a masterpiece by Artisan Tarot. Totally recommended.

The Jean Dodal Tarot Deck by Artisan Tarot is absolutely beautiful. I was looking for a TdM deck in Linen card stock and I saw many videos on youtube about the Artisan Tarot decks. I ended up purchasing the Jean Dodal, Nicolas Conver, and Jean Noblet decks because I couldn't decide what to buy first. The artwork restoration by Krisztin Kondor is amazingly beautiful. As an amatuer artist, I can appreciate the amount of effort she put into these restoration and her skills are truly topnotch. Kudos to William Rader for a well researched restoration. I only can assume the number of hours of research and design went into these. Great job Artisan Tarot. I will be buying future creations.

I own two other reproductions of the Dodal, including Flornoy’s masterful 2009 edition. And I own a ridiculous number of Marseille and Marseille-style decks … and/but… the Artisan decks have become my hands-down favorites for their clarity and precision, and above all: their glorious linen card stock.
