There are few artists whose work has sustained its power to shock, amaze, and delight audiences for over 500 years, but anyone who views The Garden of Earthly Delights will surely experience all three of those emotions at once. Although Hieronymus Bosch has a reputation as a brilliant madman, in his time, he was regarded as a master of art. His unique dreamlike style led him to be crowned the first surrealist in a period where the artistic consensus was one of realism.

Renowned occultist and bestselling author Travis McHenry has painstakingly isolated scenes and characters from Bosch's most famous paintings to create singular images that convey mystical meaning while capturing the philosophical spirit of traditional tarot cards.

The result is a deck that is beautiful, inspirational, and unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Sometimes humorous, sometimes haunting, but always captivating, The Hieronymus Bosch Tarot sets a new benchmark for tarot card decks currently available.

Travis McHenry

Travis McHenry is the author of nearly a dozen tarot and oracle decks, including the Occult Tarot, the Angel Tarot, and the Hieronymus Bosch Tarot. He is widely considered one of the foremost occultists of the modern era.

Travis studied anthropology and theater in college before serving as an intelligence analyst in the United States Navy, where he utilized his skills as a researcher to track terrorists. He brought this same tenacity to his investigation into the origin of the tarot, leading him into the tombs of ancient Egyptian nobles and rare book collections around the world.

After living in Los Angeles for many years, Travis now divides his time between his hometown in rural Pennsylvania and São Paulo, Brazil.

Creative homage to surreal art

I count the half hour I stood before Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" in Madrid one of my prime lifetime experiences. And as an amateur tarot reader, when I saw this new deck advertised, I took it as a must purchase. The deck is handsomely designed and feels good in the hand, and the booklet that accompanies it comes with intriguing interpretations of the art and its psychic links to the now-traditional Rider Deck. Purchasers should be aware that McHenry takes great liberties in fabricating new suits and in renaming (and radically reinterpreting) the trumps in the Major Arcana. But some of these feel inspired to me: I find "Female Terror" (replacing the Priestess or Female Pope) an immensely powerful Major Trump card. And new suits featuring birds, berries, and books all seem fruitful ways of exploring the spiritual world. I'm less happy with the restructuring of suits to include only court cards (adding a baron and prince to the traditional four). Readers will need to reserve extra time to internalize all the new ideas mapped out in this deck before trying to use them. But I expect this to be a fruitful challenge.
