So, what are the Trump cards?
The Trump cards are the twenty-two cards in a Tarot deck known in occult circles as the Major Arcana. In trick-taking games, these cards outrank all other card suits. This is where the phrase, “play your trump card” originates because it will give you an advantage over other people.
The word “trump” can be traced back to the Latin word “triumphu” which means a triumph or victory procession. This derives from the Greek “thriambus” which was a hymn to Dionysus which celebrated victory from a campaign to India.
Many people give readings with only the Trump cards, as they have a wide breadth of imagery and extensive allegorical history. This can be helpful for beginners who may be overwhelmed by all 78 cards.
