The Green Sheaf by Pamela Colman Smith

The Green Sheaf by Pamela Colman Smith

Many people know Pamela Colman Smith as the artist behind the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck. But before creating this iconic deck, she worked as a writer, illustrator, and theatrical designer.

In 1903, she launched her own magazine, The Green Sheaf, and published 13 monthly issues. She drew much of the artwork, and each issue was hand-colored at Smith’s Green Sheaf School of Hand-Colouring.

The magazine featured contributions by Yeats, Christopher St John (Christabel Marshall), Cecil French, A. E. (George William Russell), Gordon Craig, John Todhunter, and others. The magazine also supported women entrepreneurs by featuring their businesses.

You can read all 13 issues of The Green Sheaf on the website Yellow Nineties, an open-access scholarly resource for the study of late-Victorian magazines between 1889 and 1905.
