We are excited to share that Jeremy Griffith (@lost_angelus) has created amazing trailers for our Momentum and Portrait de Paris poker decks.
Jeremy is a magician known for his precision sleight-of-hand techniques and astounding card magic. We recently talked with Jeremy about his start in magic, his Instagram following, and what he is doing now.
Hey Jeremy! Can you let us know how you started in magic?
“I got into magic when I was 7 years old. I received a magic set from my uncle for Christmas in 1990 and I never looked back. I went pro at 14, became a member of the Magic Castle the same year and performed consistently until age 22 when I burned out and left the professional side completely. I practiced card magic mainly for myself and didn’t publicly perform for 8 years.”
How did you become popular on Instagram?
“After I got on Instagram, I found an incredible community of magicians on there. We would challenge each other to do harder and harder sleight of hand, and the longer we did that, the bigger our accounts became. And as a result, I got to travel the world to meet up with these people, I got to give lectures and create courses and decks and swim in the community I grew to love. I got to showcase all of these incredible artists and collaborate with them wherever possible.”
What are you doing now?
“About 5 years ago, my first son was born, and my family became my main focus. Now, I’m a dad of three crazy little boys. Now, I mainly use Instagram to showcase the work of the generations that came before me that no one should forget and highlight upcoming magicians.
Magic as an art form is concerned, it is very generational in the sense that the history of performance and style and effect are clearly delineated over the course of time. It’s also cumulative in the sense that every generation of magicians builds on top of the work of the magicians who came before them. So many of those old masters get lost because their work was never widely distributed through video. So, my style is based on a lot of their work. A lot of my sleight of hand is based on methods and techniques that have been around for nearly a century. The fact that nearly everything I do is happening at a card table harkens back to an era when “close-up magic” was still a new concept.
As for the generations that come after me; There are teenagers out there who handle a deck of cards in such a creative and beautiful way, I will never be able to keep up. The effects they do are so unique, they deserve a spotlight. In many instances, these creators are relatively new to the Magic world, and may not have a large following on social media, so I like to showcase them on my profile. Which ends up being awesome for me because it so very often is like getting to introduce someone to the world right before their work speaks for itself and they blow up and the world learns their name. And it makes me happy.
Every once in a while, I get a really cool deck from a company like yours and I can’t help but jump back in and have fun with them.”
