I'm a kinesthetic learner, and for as long as I can remember, I've needed to keep my hands busy. Whether it's rolling a coin, shuffling cards, or fidgeting with something small, my hands need to be in motion.
I'll never forget what happened during a class in college. I was sitting in a lecture, quietly rolling a coin in my hands under my desk, when my professor suddenly stopped mid-sentence. He thought I was texting on my phone, so he called me out in front of the entire class and asked me to leave. I was mortified.
Later that day, I went to his office to apologize and explain that I was trying to keep my coin rolling discreet so it wouldn't distract others, which is probably why it looked suspicious. I didn't even own a phone at the time! I think he felt guilty when he realized his mistake.
The next day in class, he quietly handed me a small, smooth stone. "Try this instead," he said with a smile. That little stone became my companion throughout the semester, and it genuinely helped me stay focused during his lectures.
This experience taught me about kinesthetic restlessness, a tendency among people who learn through physical activity to become fidgety in passive environments like lectures. We're not being disrespectful or inattentive; we're trying to focus better.
