John Bauer

John Bauer (1882–1918) was a Swedish illustrator and painter best known for his mystical depictions of trolls, forests, and fairy-tale scenes. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and rose to prominence illustrating the beloved Swedish folklore anthology Bland tomtar och troll (“Among Gnomes and Trolls”).

Bauer’s dreamy, nature-inspired style blended Scandinavian landscapes with mythical creatures, leaving a lasting impact on Nordic fantasy art. Though his life was tragically cut short at age 36, his work continues to enchant generations of readers and artists around the world.
